China's foreign fishing is largely unreported

A new study by the Sea Around Us project estimates that the Chinese foreign catch averaged 4.6 million metric tons a year from 2000 to 2011—much greater than the average of 368,000 tons China reported to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Programs

Ocean Science Division

The Ocean Science Division includes several major initiatives aimed at improving our scientific knowledge about the problems faced by the world’s oceans and identifying the policies that could help solve them. We develop and support scientific research, technical analyses and syntheses of scientific information.
Sea Around Us

The Sea Around Us Project studies the effects of fishing on the world’s marine ecosystems. The project has assembled global databases of fisheries information, including catches, prices, distribution of commercial marine species and marine protected areas.
Lenfest Ocean Program

The Lenfest Ocean Program invests in scientific research on living marine ecosystems, specifically focusing on the environmental, economic and social impacts of fishing, fisheries management and aquaculture.
Pew Marine Fellows

The prestigious Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation is annually awarded to five outstanding global leaders or teams who are working to preserve and protect the world’s oceans and marine species. Designed to promote innovative work, the Pew Fellowship provides flexible support and encourages creative, interdisciplinary approaches to the preservation of marine systems.

Rebuilding Fish Stocks: A $66 Billion Value

The world’s catch of marine fish exceeds the level that would maximize its economic value. Restoring populations to such optimal levels, known as rebuilding, would increase the annual value derived from fisheries (known as “economic rent”) by $66 billion, according to a June 2012 paper by Rashid Sumaila and colleagues in the journal PLOS ONE.More
New Study Says 100 Million Sharks Killed Annually

According to scientific findings released today, the number of sharks killed each year in commercial fisheries is estimated at 100 million, with a range between 63 million and 273 million. The study also warn that the rate of fishing for shark species, many of which grow slowly and reproduce late in life, exceeds their ability to recover.More
