COOL is a broad-based public education effort aimed at raising awareness about the threats of over-fishing, bycatch, and habitat destruction. During a 3-month tour in the fall of 2003, representatives of the COOL campaign toured 11 states and presented a 45-minute slide show to hundreds of groups ranging from students to divers to recreational fishermen. Since then we’ve expanded our efforts in both coastal areas and inland states. COOL representatives continue to give presentations and work with local organizations, clubs, and businesses all across the nation.
Our staff is working in states around the country to build the COOL Coalition and work for solutions to the problems in our oceans. Please contact us to see if there is a COOL regional organizer near you. We currently have almost 800 national, regional, and local groups signed on to our petition, including The Ocean Conservancy, the International Game Fish Association, PADI Project AWARE Foundation, Clean Water Action, The Jane Goodall Institute, many local chapters of the Sierra Club, and over 300 SCUBA diving groups. Noted marine stewards including Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Elliot Norse and Jean-Michel Cousteau have already signed on to the campaign.
