DIVERS OPPOSE WEAKENED OVERFISHING STANDARDS

Thousands of diving enthusiasts, including more than 40 dive shop owners, club presidents and equipment companies submitted comments opposing NOAA Fisheries' proposal to gut National Standard 1, America's most critical overfishing standard. With 1/3 of U.S. fish stocks already unsustainably fished, these changes will have lasting impacts on ocean ecosystems as well as the viability of the fishing and diving industries.

DIVERS UNITE FOR OUR OCEAN LEGACY

Ever wanted to help protect the ocean but didn't know what to do? We know about tips like not touching wildlife, maintaining good buoyancy over fragile coral, and volunteering for beach cleanups are great ways to get involved.

But what about after the adventure —
is there anything divers can do after their dive to make sure these sites remain healthy, beautiful places we can show our children?

ABSOLUTELY.

Diver Divers who join the campaign to Conserve Our Ocean Legacy (COOL) are taking the first step toward becoming active advocates for healthy oceans.

Over 300 dive clubs, dive shops, dive organizations, and dive businesses have taken the plunge, er, pledge, and joined COOL. These groups recognize the need for a unified, mobilized coalition of divers who are willing and inspired to speak up for the marine environment. This means speaking up — our leaders need to know that divers are important stake-holders in ocean policies.

COOL diver group

Whatever our actions, let's do it together and make it count. There are over 3 million active divers in the U.S. — our voice must be heard. Please explore the COOL website to find out what you can do to help protect oceans in the name of the dive community.
