Global Ocean Legacy aims to establish a worldwide system of very large, highly protected marine reserves where fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited. We work with local citizens, governments and scientists around the world to protect and preserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine environments.
Our work has been pivotal in the designation of some of the world's largest ocean reserves, including:
Collectively, these places comprise more than 55 percent of the world’s no-take waters.
We are currently working with local partners and governments to establish very large, highly protected marine reserves in Australia’s Coral Sea and New Zealand’s Kermadecs, and are investigating additional sites in France, Chile and the United Kingdom, among others.
